Germany seeks to neutralise British strength from the air, “the Battle of France is over” Churchill broadcasts, “the Battle of Britain has begun”. It is a victory for the United Kingdom, the only country opposing Hitler who has almost the whole of the European continent now under his control. Germany moves to support her Italian ally in North Africa. The Battle of Britain has repelled the Luftwaffe but the bombing campaign (“the blitz”) targets British cities.
