Overland | Season 14 | Episode 4 – Azerbaijan 2
We leave the Talish Mountains to reach the bucolic city of Lankaran, which is famous for the massive tower where a young Stalin was imprisoned for a period after taking part in the prime uprisings. We shall cross the vast central plain of Azerbaijan heading north, where pastoralism and agriculture are the main sources of income for the population, up to the “Five Finger Mountain”, a sacred place that is visited every day by hundreds of pilgrims. We shall cross the Lower Caucasus, which is now home to the many refugees who escaped after the dramatic conflict with Armenia, until we near the closed border in the delicate and militarised Nagorno Karabakh area, which is still disputed between the Azerbaijanis and the Armenians who fire shots at one another from their trenches.
