Dr Janina Ramirez continues to chart how monasteries shaped every aspect of medieval Britain as she looks at the golden age of the British monastery - the medieval period. Monks transformed British society, and subsequently rose to a position of immense power. Over 500 British monastic houses were established by the 14th century, and monks became pioneers in the fields of medicine, science, scholarship, industry, farming, art and music. However, their inevitable wealth, combined with the sins of individual monks left the religious institutions they called home on the brink of a catastrophic and total collapse.
