A Desert Between Us and Them | Episode 2 | The Traitors

48m 11s

For those who remained in Southwestern Ontario after the British abandonment, there were few choices. Some became insurgents and continued to fight a gorilla war against the invaders, but for those who were already unhappy with unjust governance by a distant, British power - the prospect of American democracy was appealing; and there was little to stop the disaffected from aiding the Americans, with the army and the authority of the British long gone. The turncoats helped the Americans navigate the landscape, and lead many successful raids, in what was quickly becoming a lawless territory. To encourage loyalty in the remaining citizenry, the British rounded up all of the traitors and sympathizers they could find. Eight men were hanged, and many more were imprisoned for their indiscretions.
